Augusta - The Masters will move up Sunday's final-round start and schedule threesomes off two tees to try and finish before oncoming severe storms, Augusta National Golf Club chairman Fred Ridley announced on Saturday.
Threesomes will start from the first and 10th tees starting at 07:30 (13:30 SA time) with leaders beginning at 09:20 (15:20 SA time). Gates will open to spectators at 07:15 (13:15).
Forecasts predict severe thunderstorms for late Sunday afternoon in the vicinity of the famed course, when leaders would normally be battling for the green jacket.
That prompted the safety move to protect players and spectators.
"The safety of everyone on our grounds is paramount," Ridley said.
"We also believe the earlier start will give us the best opportunity to complete the Masters on Sunday. This decision should benefit everyone - the players, our patrons and our fans watching around the world.
"Given the competitiveness and drama of this year's tournament, we look forward to an exciting conclusion tomorrow (Sunday)."
