Spain's Jon Rahm sent the rest of the field quite a statement Saturday, shooting the best round of the day and finishing 54 holes with the outright lead at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, Calif.
Starting the day in 11th place and five shots off the lead, Rahm fired out of the gate with a birdie on No. 1 and an eagle on No. 2, both par 4s. On the 395-yard second hole, Rahm holed out from 111 yards to put him at 8 under for the tournament with 16 holes to go.
He would birdie the par-5 sixth and par-5 ninth to make the turn at 5 under, then birdie the par-5 13th and par-3 16th to finish his bogey-free round with five birdies and an eagle.
Ryan Palmer, who started the day in first place following his 10-under 62 Friday, sits one shot behind Rahm at 11-under overall following his 1-under 71.
Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy is one of four golfers at 9 under following his 5-under 67 in Round 3. Korea's Sung Kang (67), as well as Cameron Champ (68) and Harry Higgs (69) also sit three shots off the lead. Seven golfers are another shot back, including Brandt Snedeker, who began the day in second place, two strokes behind Palmer. Snedeker shot an even-par 72 on Saturday.
Tiger Woods, who began the day tied for 17th and six shots out of the lead, shot a 3-under par 69 to finish at 7-under 209 and will head into the final round tied for 14th. After four birdies on the front nine, Woods had a bogey on the back nine to go along with eight pars, but made two sand saves and sank his longest putt of the day to save par at No. 18.
"It was important to make that putt to salvage the round there toward the end and get some kind of positive momentum going into tomorrow," Woods said on the CBS broadcast immediately following his round.
Woods, whose eight wins at Torrey Pines include the 2008 U.S. Open, is seeking a record 83rd career PGA Tour victory. He currently shares the record with Sam Snead.
