Patrick Reed shot a 4-under 67 on Sunday to win the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship in Mexico City by one shot over Bryson DeChambeau.
Reed carded five birdies and one bogey on his final trip around Chapultepec Golf Club to finish at 18-under 266. The victory is the eighth of Reed'scareer.
"It's very rewarding," Reed said during a post-round interview with NBC. "The last hole was ugly but it was what I needed just to get the job done.
"At the end of the day, just putting yourself in these positions on Sunday is unbelievable. It's a great feeling."
It is the second career WGC-Championship victory for Reed. He also prevailed at the Cadillac Championship at Doral in 2014.
Reed rolled off three straight birdies from holes 15 though 17 while passing DeChambeau and taking the lead.
Reed gave himself the cushion he needed when he drained a 17-foot, birdie putt on the 17th hole to increase his lead to two shots.
He knocked his tee shot on 18 into the right rough before recovering and knocking in a two-foot putt for bogey to wrap up his eighth career victory.
"It was an interesting day to say the least," Reed said in his post-round press conference.
DeChambeau had eight birdies and two bogeys while shooting a 7-under 65. He hurt his chances with a bogey on the par-3 17th hole shortly before Reed delivered the big putt on the same hole.
"Unfortunately, 17 happened today," DeChambeau told the Golf Channel. "I hit a good shot and it got caught by the wind and spun off the hill and consequently, I had a long putt in. My speed was off today. I three-putted (three times). If I don't three-putt (on 17), I win."
Spain's Jon Rahm and South Africa's Erik van Rooyen tied for third at 15-under 269. Rahm shot 67 one day after setting a course record with a 10-under 61, while van Rooyen shot 70.
"I've been scoring really well," Rahm told the Golf Channel. "I can hit the golf ball a lot better than I have this year. I try to get the most out of it and fight to the end."
Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy recorded four birdies and one bogey while carding a 68 to finish fifth, four shots back of Reed.
Justin Thomas (2-over 73 on Sunday), Japan's Hideki Matsuyama (67) and England's Tyrrell Hatton (68) tied for sixth at 13 under.
It was a highly disappointing round for Thomas, who led by one shot entering the final round. He had a double-bogey and four bogeys along with sinking four birdies.
Three of the bogeys came on the front nine and things got worse when Thomas double-bogeyed the par-4, 10th hole to fall 3-over for the day and out of contention.
Reed has come under recent criticism for improving his lie during the Hero World Challenge in December in the Bahamas. Brooks Koepka was the latest to criticize him just before the start of this tournament, but Reed said he didn't have anything to prove to the golf world.
"I felt like I had something to prove to myself coming into this week because I felt like I have been playing some solid golf but just haven't quite gotten over the hump to get the 'W,'" Reed said. "... I knew I needed to continue to improve on my golf game but at the same time, block out all the noise, no matter what it was.
"I feel like I've been able to do that really well throughout my career."
DeChambeau acknowledged that Reed isn't the most popular player on the PGA Tour. But despite finishing his round a short time earlier, he sought out Reed to congratulate him.
"He's a great player," DeChambeau said. "There's been a lot of stuff said in the past years with him and even with me. I feel like, unfortunately, we get a bad rap. Yeah, there are things that we've done that hasn't been right but we're trying to provide great entertainment for everyone. He'll be a great player for a long time and I have respect for his game."
